Flat and Easy
Easy ~ 3KM ~ 2-3 Hours
Lovely little walk through the countryside from old Amersham to Little Missenden and back.
Plenty of free parking outside although weekends can be busy. There’s also a pay and display near the big Tescos.
With the pub behind you, turn right and walk down the High Street, past the Swan and Eagle pubs.
Once you reach Mill Lane (it’s a road on your right by an old Mill House), cross over the High Street and walk on the left hand side pavement continuing out of Amersham. Follow the pavement and it becomes a paved footpath and starts to separate from the roadside.
Following the path all the way brings you out at the side of the A413.
Be very careful crossing this road; although you have a good view of traffic approaching from both sides, they can be travelling very quickly. If in doubt, just wait a bit longer before attempting to cross.
Once you’ve crossed the road you’re in effect on a private lane. Turn right and walk about 100m to a small junction with an old Post Box on your left. Turn left and 20m you’ll see a turning and driveway into Amersham Cricket Club. Walk into here
If the cricket teams are playing you may be able to grab a quick pint or refresher at the club but always ask, don’t assume it is open for non-members as they do hold private events here too.
Follow the drive round the back of the cricket pavilion and walk round the back cricket field. You should see a pop-up cafe in the far corner of this cricket field. This is Koko’s and, when open, serves coffees, soft drinks, sandwiches, and ice creams.
Next to Koko’s is a footpath. Follow this, but remember that it can be very very muddy down here.
Dogs on leads from here on please.
When you get to the end of Koko’s footpath you’ll come into a large field, often with sheep, geese, and horses. keep to the right hand side by the lake and walk to the end.
You can’t miss Shardeloes on your left at the top of the hill – it’s the enormous white house, once a private residence for a single family, but now split into apartments. The footpath runs along the bottom by the lake so please don’t go wandering up the hill.
At the end of the field there’s a kissing gate into the next field.
Again, dogs on leads through all of these fields please.
Follow the track; basically going straight on, and keep going. You’ll pass through a couple of fields and gates and you’ll eventually reach a proper road.
You’ve reached Village Road in Little Missenden.
Turn left, and about 50m you’ll reach the Crown on the right handside. Enjoy!
If you want, you can walk a bit further along and you’ll get to the Red Lion which is also a decent pub. The Red Lion has a decent but quirky pub garden with a huge trout/carp pond. You’ll have to see it for yourself to appreciate it all.
Once you’ve had your fill of Little Missenden, retrace your steps back through the fields and the cricket club, to Amersham High Street and the Elephant and Castle.
